3D model produced of Apollo 11's command module

The Smithsonian Institution and Autodesk launched an extraordinary project at the end of 2015: Columbia, the command module of Apollo 11 was scanned inside and out. It was a greatly challenging job as the researchers were not allowed to touch or go inside the module. They used special cameras, scanners, laser and mechanical arms to solve the problem.

On 20 July, on the 47th anniversary of the moon landing, it was announced that the scanned data in the form of a 3D model with extremely good quality resolution and incredible details was released online for the general public, that is anyone can print the module.

Fifty laser scanners and thousands of images were used.
